Sande is a municipality in the county of
Vestfold,
Norway.
Sande was established as a municipality
January 1,
1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt).
The municipality is located about 40 minutes driving south of Oslo, and lies beautifully by the Sea. In recent years the center of Sande has grown significantly due to a a large number of new apartments and stores.
Parts of the
Olsenbanden-movie "Olsenbanden tar gull" from 1973 was filmed in Sande, and another part in Stavern.
The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Sande (
Norse Sandvin), since the first church was built here. The first element is
sandr m 'sand', the last element is
vin f 'meadow, pasture'.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). The figure is meant to represent Sandebukta ('the bay of Sande').
